How to: Backup your NOVAFiDELITY X30

Below you will find step by step instructions on:

  1. Backing up to an external USB hard-drive or memory stick

  2. Backing up over a network

  3. Speeding up the backup process

We recommend backing up the music and data stored on your NOVAFiDELITY any time you add a large amount of new music by ripping CDs or importing, or change lots of CD meta-data or album art.

Playlists and iRadio favourites are now also backed with Firmware Release R0069.

Note: you are responsible for the safe keeping of the data stored on your NOVAFiDELITY X30.

The backup procedure on the X30 is not incremental, so each time you run a backup the X30 will backup all of your music from scratch. You can find some tips below for speeding up the backup process.

1. Backing up to an external USB hard-drive or memory stick

To back up to an external USB hard drive you will need one with a capacity equal to or exceeding the amount of data stored on your X30 - click here to find out how much data you have stored on your X30.

  • Connect the USB hard drive or memory stick to the NOVAFiDELITY via USB
  • From the home menu, go:
    • Setup -> Music DB -> Backup
  • Select 'USB1'
  • Make sure the Music DB Size is less than the Backup Device Free capacity
  • Select OK
  • It will take few moments to read the data before starting the backup.
  • On completion a message saying 'Success' will be displayed, select 'OK' and remove your external USB hard-drive.

2. Backing up over a network

First you will need to set up a network share for the network location that you want to back up to.

Then from the home menu, go:

  • Setup -> Music DB -> Backup
  • Select the network share you have just set up
  • Make sure the Music DB Size is less than the Backup Device Free capacity
  • Select 'OK'
  • It will take few moments to read the data before starting the backup.
  • On completion a message saying 'Success' will be displayed, select 'OK'

Note: we only recommend backing up over a network if your X30 is connected via Eternet, doing so over Wi-Fi would take an extremely long time.

3. Speeding up the back-up process

To make the backup can run as quickly as possible make sure that the internal X30 storage and the external USB drive are both formatted with the Linux (ext3) file structure.

  • It should then take just under 1min to back up 1 GB of data

IMPORTANT - before re-formatting your internal X30 hard-drive or external USB hard-drive please read the rest of this guide.

If you bought your X30 with a hard-drive already installed, it should already be formatted with the Linux (ext3) file structure. To check, go:

  • Setup -> System -> Format Storage
  • Select Internal HDD
  • Underneath Total Size it should say Linux
  •  NOTE - Make sure to back out to the home screen so you don't accidentally re-format the hard-drive

You can find instructions on how to re-format an external drive with the X30 here.

NOTE: if you re-format your external hard-drive as Linux (ext3) and have a windows PC, you will not be able to use it with your computer without first a 3rd party utility.

Re-formatting a hard-drive wipes all of the data stored on it. So backup anything you don't want to lose before re-formatting.
